• “We worked with many different designers and consultants throughout the construction of our home and Romila was one of the best! She both designed the landscaping and worked with us during the construction process, which was very helpful to ensure that everything looked good in real life.

Now that the construction is complete, we are very happy with the result and frequently get complements from our neighbors. Starting from bare dirt, I was initially concerned that the yard would feel small once everything was built. In reality, the opposite was true - Romila fit in many distinct spaces and features without crowding and now it actually seems larger. It's a great space to play, entertain, grow fruit and look at!”

  • “Romila is fantastic! She designed & managed the construction of our yards/gardens in the front & the back, completely overhauling the standard “contractor” landscaping we had. She was knowledgeable, creative and attentive to what we wanted. We requested native, non-invasive, pollinator-attracting, and drought-tolerant plants, and she knew exactly what would work for us. We also wanted water features. She designed the back for year-round outdoor living with a pergola, small outdoor kitchen, and abundant seating. The result is a fabulous garden that we love—and so do the butterflies, bees, and birds. It’s lovely year round.

Romila was a delight to work with and we highly recommend her to anyone looking to transform an outdoor living space.”

At Painted Meadow Designs, every service is guided by the same intention: creating spaces that feel personal, natural, and inviting. From planting layouts and garden concepts to home styling and digital tools, our work focuses on design that enhances daily life with beauty and ease. Each project is rooted in care, creativity, and a quiet sense of balance, whether a complete garden vision or a thoughtful update to get a single space.

Our Services

Landscape Design

We design complete garden concepts that bring together layout, hardscape, and planting into one cohesive vision. Paths, patios, and gathering areas are shaped to encourage flow and connection, while planting adds rhythm and softness. Our drawings and visualizations provide a clear direction for how your space will look and function, and can be used directly by contractors to guide construction.

Planting Design

Plants bring life and character to a garden. We craft palettes that reflect your preferences and lifestyle, layering color, texture, and seasonal change so the planting feels alive throughout the year. Whether bold and dramatic or calm and restrained, each design is tailored to complement the space and enrich the experience of being in it.

Consultations

Whether you’re starting fresh or refining an existing garden, we offer one-on-one sessions to walk your space, answer questions, and provide design direction tailored to your needs. These consultations give you actionable ideas and solutions you can implement right away.

Home Styling

We style indoor and outdoor rooms with furniture, finishes, and natural textures that echo the calm of the garden. Each space is curated to feel connected, comfortable, and reflective of your lifestyle.

Digital Tools

Our collection of planners, guides, and resources makes garden design more accessible and user-friendly. These tools share the methods we use in practice, helping you plan, design, and enjoy your own space with confidence.

Step 1

Defining the Project

Every garden begins with a story. We’ll visit your home, walk the space, and listen to your vision. This is your chance to share how you imagine using your garden while we notice its character and potential.

Step 2

Reading the Land

We gather all available information about your site—its opportunities, challenges, and requirements. This may include local codes, permits, or other constraints. If needed, we collaborate with specialists such as land surveyors or soil engineers to ensure the foundation of your design is solid.

Step 3

Exploring Concepts

This is where vision begins to take form. We create conceptual designs that reflect the elements identified in your program, allowing you to see possibilities and imagine how your future garden could unfold.

Step 4

Refining the Design

Here we shape the details: spatial relationships, character, and materials. Budget considerations are woven in, and when needed, we collaborate with architects, engineers, or arborists. The design becomes more defined while staying rooted in your vision.

Step 5

Preparing the Plans

Once the direction and budget are confirmed, we produce detailed drawings and specifications. These may include hardscape layouts, planting and irrigation plans (with water budgets), lighting, and protective measures for soil and trees. This set becomes the roadmap for permits, bidding, and construction.

Step 6

Guiding Construction

Our involvement doesn’t end when drawings are complete. We can assist in selecting contractors, attending pre-construction meetings, and reviewing materials. During installation, we provide field observations, answer questions, and resolve issues as they arise. At the end, we prepare a punch list to ensure everything is completed with care, and may return for a post-occupancy review to see your garden fully lived in.
